TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – A Pascua Yaqui man charged with killing the brother of the tribe’s former chairwoman is scheduled to stand trial in April.

Authorities say 19-year-old Gerardo Benito Ramirez remains in the Pima County jail, where he has been since May after being arrested in connection with the Jan. 1, 2007, slaying of Gabriel Frias.

Authorities say the 32-year-old Frias was gunned down following an altercation at a New Year’s Eve party on the Pascua Yaqui Indian Reservation southwest of Tucson.

The Arizona Daily Star says Frias was the brother of Herminia Frias, who served as tribal chairwoman from 2004-08.

Ramirez was indicted in December on 14 federal counts, including first-degree murder and six counts of assault with intent to commit murder while armed in Indian country, court documents show.
