Tribal women’s group to bolster domestic violence prevention

INDIAN TOWNSHIP, Maine (AP) – A tribal coalition for Maine’s American Indian women will receive more than $300,000 from the federal government to help prevent sexual assault and domestic violence.

The Wabanaki Women’s Coalition is receiving the grant from the federal Department of Justice’s Tribal Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalitions Program.

The coalition will be able to use the money to respond to incidents of domestic violence, advocate for victims and make sure that they receive care.

The Wabanaki Women’s Coalition is a group that seeks to prevent and respond to sexual and domestic violence. It represents the Aroostook Band of Micmacs, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Indian Township Passamaquoddy, Penobscot Indian Nation, and Pleasant Point Passamaquoddy.
