OKMULGEE, Okla. – The Fourth Annual MCN Citizens’ Diabetes Awareness Summit is coming soon!  Join other Creek citizens and other Native Americans on August 17 at the First Baptist Church in Okmulgee to hear experts in diabetes and prevention.  Registration begins at 7:00 A.M.

The Summit program starts at 8:30 A.M.  Come earlier if you want to participate in the screening and exercise activities.   If you want your cholesterol screened, do not eat anything after midnight.  Screening will be from 7:00 to 8:15 A.M. and Yoga, a favorite option last year, or group walking, will start at 7:30 A.M.

This year, we are giving several opportunities in the morning for Creek persons with diabetes and their families to tell their stories about diabetes.  Tribal and Health leaders are on the agenda to listen to citizens’ concerns about diabetes prevention in Muscogee Creek Nation.  These leaders will remember your stories when they are making decisions about improving diabetes care during the coming year.

The Summit brings a variety of experts from all over the nation to speak directly to Creek citizens about diabetes care and prevention.   Many of these experts are Native American.  Several have also experienced diabetes personally or in their families.   They will be able to speak about ways to improve diabetes care that will fit more easily into our way of living.

The morning program will be a mix of presentations and opportunities to visit learning booths and exhibits.   Screening for blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol and protective sensation of the feet will also be available during the morning break.  A healthy free lunch will be provided while Chance Rush entertains with Indian stories he has gathered while growing up in a large Indian family in Oklahoma.  If humor heals, you will be well on your way to full health after his talk.

In the afternoon, Will Hill and Jeanine Washington will perform a delightful play called “The Bear and The Rabbit”.   It was a big hit at the recent opening of the “Festival of Eagles” during the Creek Festival.  We will also have many breakout options for the afternoon including; Yoga, Kickboxing, and active play games.   A new activity this year is an opportunity for individuals and families to “Ask the Expert”.  Several experts will be available just to answer questions.

Set the date, August 17,  to come to the Summit.  It will be fun.  You will be inspired.  And you will get some information that will make living with diabetes easier.
