MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A Republican has delayed final passage of a bill that would force schools to drop American Indian logos or face fines.

Under the bill, a school district resident could complain to the state about a race-based school nickname, logo or mascot. If the state superintendent finds discrimination, the superintendent must order the school board to stop. Boards that don’t would face daily forfeitures ranging from $100 to $1,000.

The Assembly amended the bill Tuesday to allow the superintendent to choose not to investigate if a federally recognized tribe has granted a district permission to refer to or depict the tribe, but Rep. Stephen Nass, a Whitewater Republican, objected to a final reading.

That means the earliest the Assembly can take it up again would be Thursday.
