Legislature passes compact for Yreka tribal casino

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The Legislature has ratified a gambling compact with the Karuk tribe, approving a casino in Yreka.

In December, Gov. Jerry Brown had signed off on a casino with 1,500 slot machines. Democratic Sen. Lou Correa of Anaheim carried the agreement in the Legislature as SB1224.

The state Assembly approved the bill on a 63-1 vote Tuesday after it won Senate approval last week.

The compact says the tribe will pay the state 10 percent of the casino’s net win. The money would be shared with other tribes that do not have significant gambling income.

The Karuk tribe in far Northern California is the state’s second largest Native American community. The tribal website says it plans to finish building the casino by fall 2015.
