TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The annual Cornstalk Shoot during the 57th Cherokee National Holiday offers archers the chance to share an ancient tradition while showing off their skills. The tournament will be held Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6 at the far end of the field behind the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service office located at the Cherokee Nation tribal complex on Highway 62 south of Tahlequah.
Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. both days. Following registration will be the Primitive shoot at 8a.m., Cherokee Traditional longbow at 9:30 a.m., Youth division ages 6-14 at 11a.m., and the Recurve/laminated shoot will be held at 12:30 p.m. The Community Play-off cornstalk shoot competition will be held Sunday afternoon following the Recurve shoot.
“There is no limit on the amount of participants in each category,” said Debra Grayson, event coordinator. “We travel to the community games in an effort to gain new archers, spark an interest in the bow and help Cherokee Nation with their effort to promote the traditional games.”
There will be an entry fee of $6 per contestant for the Cherokee Traditional longbow and Recurve/laminated shoots. All other shoot competitions are free.
