FORT TOTTEN, N.D. (AP) – Some members of the Spirit Lake Nation are unhappy that other tribal members have filed a federal lawsuit to support the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname.
The nickname that the NCAA considers offensive is likely to be retired, but Spirit Lake supporters are resisting the effort.
Nickname opponents on the Spirit Lake Reservation are questioning whether the authority of the Tribal Council-backed pro-nickname Committee for Understanding and Respect should be revoked. They're circulating petitions to try to bring the matter to a vote.
