Deadline approaches for the 41st Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale


TAHLEQUAH, Okla., (January 27, 2012) --- The Cherokee Heritage Center announced a “Call For Entries” on artwork submissions now through March 26 for the 41st Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale set to run April 21 through May 20 featuring authentic Native American art in one of Oklahoma’s oldest art shows.

Key Dates For Artists

- March 26 - Photographs of artwork must be in digital form and received by email at
mickel-yantz@cherokee.org or by CD and mailed to the shipping address listed on the website for FedEx, UPS and USPS. Photographs must be of actual completed artwork to be shown. No late entries will be accepted.

- April 2 – Accepted artwork will be posted at http://www.CherokeeHeritage.org and confirmation notices will be emailed.

- April 9 – Artists must deliver their accepted artwork by 5 p.m. to the Cherokee Heritage Center. Artwork not received or arriving late will not be featured in the show.

- April 20 - The 41st Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale award reception and ceremony runs from 6-8 p.m. Winning artwork will be announced and ribbons and prize money will be awarded.

Rules and Instructions

- Categories – Artists will compete in eight categories including paintings, graphics, sculpture, pottery, basketry, miniatures, jewelry and Trail of Tears theme.

- Eligibility – A variety of eligibility requirements are listed including, but not limited to, artists must be at least 18 years of age and must be a member of a federally recognized Nation or Tribe. A copy of the artist’s tribal membership card or CDIB must accompany entry. Artwork must be completed after May 1, 2011. Previously shown work at the Cherokee Heritage Center is not eligible. Entries that contain parts of endangered species will be automatically disqualified. Entries must be ready for display. All works submitted will be juried for inclusion in this show.

- Additional Criteria – Complete details are presented online for acceptance, judging, sales, display, return of art, public notice, and shipping and handling.


During the 41st Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale award reception and ceremony the Cherokee National Historical Society will honor all of the artists and present the Grand Prize Award; First, Second and Third Place awards; Honorable Mention Awards; and the People’s Choice Award.

The 2011 Grand Prize was awarded to Troy Jackson, Cherokee, for “Putting The Pieces Together” in the pottery category. The exhibition had 35 winners in nine categories with nearly $10,000 awarded and included 93 Native American artists from 13 Tribal Nations featuring 155 art pieces.

“We are looking forward to another great year for the Trail of Tears Art Show,” said Mickel Yantz, Museum Curator at the Cherokee Heritage Center. “With so many tremendously talented Native American artists participating from so many tribes, the show truly gets better each year.”

The Chickasaw Nation is sponsoring the 41st Annual Trail of Tears Art Show and Sale.


Cherokee Heritage Center admission is $8.50 per adult, $7.50 per senior (55 and older) and students with proper identification, and $5 per child. Admission price includes all attractions. Entry to the grounds and museum store are free.

The Cherokee Heritage Center is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week from April 29 to Sept 3. It is closed during January and on Sundays from Feb. 1 to April 28 and Sept. 4 to Dec. 31.
