CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) – A legislative committee is set to consider a bill to allow counties to change voting districts that some American Indians say targets them.
The House Corporations, Elections and Political Subdivisions Committee is set to hear the bill on Feb.10. It has already cleared the Senate.
The bill would change Wyoming law to allow election of county commissioners in combinations of at-large voting and from established districts.
American Indians won a court ruling last year forcing Fremont County to stop its system of at-large voting on the grounds it disenfranchised Indians.
Fremont County is appealing a judge's order denying its request to set up one district for Indians and continue with at-large voting elsewhere. The Indians and their lawyers say the pending bill is an effort to evade the court order.
