Calendar cover art by Dolores Purdy Corcoran - Corcoran is on the standards committee for the internationally known "Santa Fe Market."  She is a historian and her work is created on original ledger paper from the 1800's.  She brings her contemporary  style to a historical and traditional medium. NORMAN, Okla. – Thirteen of the nation’s most well known Native artists will be in Norman Dec. 5-6 to sign copies of an art calendar showcasing their work. Now in its sixteenth year, this event never fails to bring in fans from across Oklahoma and the surrounding states.
“The draw this group of artists has is outstanding.  Customers begin purchasing the calendars in June of each year to ensure they have theirs for this event,” Leslie Zinbi said.
Several authors will also be at the gallery this weekend with their latest books, including Murv Jacob from Tahlequah and Deborah Duvall from Tulsa.  Jabob and Duvall write and illustrate books about Cherokee myths and legends featuring all animals and are generally done for children.  Both tour and lecture across the nation.
This year’s calendar artists are:  Dolores Purdy Corcoran, Caddo, is the cover artist. The other artists are: Troy Anderson, Master Artist of the Five Civilized Tribes; Harvey Pratt, Southern Cheyenne; Benjamin Harjo, Jr., Seminole/Shawnee and a 2009 Oklahoma Living Treasure; Wayne Cooper, Yuchi descent who has 14 commissioned pieces in the Okla. State Capital and is working on his 15th; Norma Howard, Choctaw, Master Artist of the Five Civilized Tribes; Elena Pate, Choctaw; George Levi, Southern Cheyenne, ledger artist; Brent Learned, Arapaho; Robby McMurtry, Comanche descent, an artist and author who just completed his latest book on Ned Christie; Charles Chapman, Pawnee, Master Artist; Richard Ray Whitman, Yuchi, artist and actor; and David Kaskaske, Otoe-Missouria, Master Artist.
“This group has extensive resumes and I am lucky to have all 13 of them together. More than 800 calendars have presold,” Zinbi said.
The calendars ship out next week across the nation.
