BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) – The Tejon Tribe has purchased an old school building in Bakersfield to use as its headquarters.

KBAK-TV reports that Tribal Vice Chair Kathryn Morgan says the school building is the first place the tribe has called home in 150 years.

The Tejon Tribe was just recognized in 2012, the schoolhouse is its first property.

The tribe has asked the U.S. Department of the Interior to put the property in trust for them. The purchase was made using block grant funds.

Officials say the tribe hopes to be using the school site in 18 to 24 months.
