Fremont Co. elections cost nearly $77,000

RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) – The two special elections held in Fremont County last November and January cost taxpayers nearly $77,000.

Federal court rulings last year determined that the county's at-large method of electing county commissioners diluted American Indian strength at the polls. Five single-member districts were created as a result, but the commission elections had to be held separately from the statewide primary and general election because of timing issues.

Instead, Fremont County voters went to the polls in three of the five commission districts for a special primary on Nov. 16 and special general elections on Jan. 18.

The Riverton Ranger reports that turnout in the special primary and general elections were both below 30 percent.
