BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Federal authorities have confirmed that law officers shot and killed a man on the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation last week.

FBI spokesman Kyle Loven tells The Associated Press that 31-year-old Joseph Charboneau (SHAHR’-buh-noh) was killed during an altercation with Bureau of Indian Affairs officers on June 16.

Loven says the officers went to a residence to arrest another person, and an altercation ensued that resulted in Charboneau being shot. Loven says no one else was hurt.

The FBI is not releasing further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Charboneau’s family members tell WDAZ-TV that they haven’t received any information from authorities on what happened, and they’re frustrated. Charboneau has a criminal record and family members say he has done prison time but was trying to put his life back together.
