YALE, Okla. (AP) – The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation is investigating the death of an immature bald eagle that was found along the Cimarron River near Yale.

Lt. Jon Cunningham, a game warden, says residents found the bird's carcass earlier this month in an area frequented by recreational users of the river. Cunningham says the eagle had been shot and certain body parts had been removed.

Cunningham says he believes the eagle was shot several weeks ago.

Bald eagles are protected by the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Violation of those laws could lead to a $5,000 fine and a possible jail term.

Cunningham urged people to call Operation Game Thief (800-522-8039) if they have information about the killing and mutilation. Cash rewards may be available.
