SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – A man who has served 30 years of a life sentence for killing his adoptive father in their South Dakota home likely will get a chance to make his case for early release to the full Board of Pardons and Paroles.

The Argus Leader reports that after a Feb.9 hearing, a two-member panel intends to advance the case of Tim Caffrey.

Former Gov. Mike Rounds before he left office commuted Caffrey's life sentence for manslaughter in the 1981 shooting death of William Caffrey in Martin to 237 years, making Caffrey eligible for parole.

Supporters of Caffrey, an American Indian, say he had been tormented by his white father. The man who prosecuted the 17-year-old Caffrey in 1981 has said he's a psychopath.
