PIERRE, S.D. (AP) – The South Dakota State Historical Society is celebrating the return of the Great Sioux Horse Effigy and South Dakota’s Native American Day with Lt. Gov. Matt Michels serving as master of ceremonies.

The historical society said Wednesday that the event will be on Oct. 12 in Pierre.

The event at the Cultural Heritage Center includes speakers ranging from state Secretary of Tribal Relations Steve Emery to Kevin Gover.

Gover is director of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington.

The society is also hosting other events in Pierre to celebrate the return of the effigy.
