The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded a grant of $119,128 to the Tulsa Housing Authority to provide housing assistance for homeless Veterans here in Eastern Oklahoma.

Nationwide, HUD and VA awarded $62 million in grants to public housing agencies on Oct. 2 to provide rental assistance to 9,000 homeless Veterans.

According to a nationwide census conducted by HUD and VA in January 2014, there are approximately 49, 900 homeless Veterans in the U.S. The number has declined 33 percent, or 24,837 people, since 2010.

To help Veterans exit homelessness, the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program combines rental assistance for homeless Veterans with case management and clinical services provided by VA at nearby VA medical centers and community-based outpatient clinics. In Eastern Oklahoma, the HUD-VASH Program currently has 206 Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) available for Veterans and their families.

If you are a Veteran who has lost your home, VA can help you get back on your feet. Contact VA’s National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID-VET (1-877-424-3838) to speak to a trained VA responder.
