MAMA Knows, Inc. will be hosting a Shawl Circle Train the Trainer April 10th & 11t, 2014 in Ardmore, Okla. at the Southern Oklahoma Vo-tech Center.

The Shawl Circle is a community-level HIV/AIDS, breast and cervical cancer prevention program designed for American Indian women and girls. The program uses community health advocates to educate American Indian women and girls within their communities and social networks.

Respectful of our American Indian communities sovereignty and understanding that department staff may be viewed with fear and distrust when taking educational and preventive messages to the community, this project brings together respected women from tribes, bands and/or clans to provide them with the education and materials needed to present the information in the correct cultural and traditional context for their community. As each woman completes the program, she is presented with a specially-designed shawl. The shawl serves as a visual symbol of her commitment to keep herself healthy and strong

This hands-on training is designed to provide participants who work with American Indian women and girls the skills needed to creatively capture their attention and encourage behavior change. After completion, each participant will have the tools (including curriculum) needed to implement their very own Shawl Circle within their community.

Registration fee is $25.00. Scholarships are available, but limited. Contact our office at (580)226-4238 or via email, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
