MISHICOT, Wis. (AP) – The Mishicot School District has no plans to drop its Indian logo and mascot because of a new state law signed recently by Gov. Jim Doyle.

The district is one of about a dozen in Wisconsin that have not dropped the Indian nickname.

Mishicot Superintendent Colleen Timm says the school district has written permission from the Hannahville Potawatomi to use the Indian nickname and logo. The community is named for Native American Chief Abraham Mishicott.

The law signed by the governor allows the state school superintendent to ban American Indian mascots, nicknames and logos.

Timm tells the Herald Times Reporter the district has had no formal complaints in the six years she has been principal and superintendent in Mishicot.
