Course Topics:
Protecting Cultural Property in the Biotech Age: Ten weeks, starting  7/12/10
This course will address the ways in which tribes can and should protect their cultural property, whether it be songs, artefacts, sacred sites, remains of the ancestors, traditional medicines, Indigenous knowledge about such medicines, or human and non-human genetic material.  A particular focus will be on exercise of tribal sovereignty over research involving tribal culture, land and people (including in fields such as anthropology, ethnobotany, medicine, linguistics, biology, etc.).  The main objective of this course is to provide guidance to tribes faced with the unique problems posed by biotechnology

Violence against Native Women: Ten weeks, starting 7/9/10
This course covers tribal, state, and federal laws and regulations impacting the lives and safety of Native women, as well as the crimes of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The course is for anyone seeking training and education on the laws and policies that impact Native women victims of violence in the United States. No prior experience necessary.

Ø  Interest in working with Native communities
Ø  Willingness to learn moderately complex academic and/or legal principles
Ø  Dedication to completing the course and corresponding regularly with the instructor
