BETHEL, Alaska (AP) – The Lower Kuskokwim School District in Bethel is working to open a Yupik immersion school in February.

KYUK-AM reports that the district has leased a building from the Bethel Native Corporation for the Ayaprun Yupik immersion school.

District officials are working with the Fire marshal to make sure the building is up to code and will borrow wall partitions from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation to create classrooms.

The district will lease the building for three to five years while a new school on the district camps is under construction.
