LANCASTER, N.Y. (AP) – A western New York school board has unanimously voted to approve changing the nickname of the district's athletic teams from the R*dsk*ns to the Legends.

The Lancaster School Board officially adopted the new team name, mascot and logo during Monday night's meeting.

Last week, Lancaster students voted to choose the Legends nickname from a list of seven candidates.

The vote was conducted after the school board agreed in March to retire the district's 70-year-old R*dsk*n nickname, considered by many to be an insult to Native Americans.

The issue drew national attention after several Buffalo-area school districts with Native American students began canceling lacrosse games with Lancaster teams.
