WINNEBAGO, Neb. (AP) – A new researched-based Educare preschool and daycare will open later this month in northeast Nebraska to help educate kids from the Winnebago Indian Tribe.

The new $10 million center was possible because of the financial backing of the Buffett Early Childhood Fund. It will open Oct. 17.

The preschool center will serve nearly 200 kids in an area where 80 percent of the residents are living in poverty.

Research has shown that low-income students often start school less prepared than their peers from middle-class and affluent families, and then many low-income students struggle to catch up.

Susie Buffett has helped create other Educare centers. She is the daughter of investor Warren Buffett, and she has focused much of her philanthropy on improving early childhood education.
