MUSKOGEE, Okla. – Bacone College is offering new scholarships worth up to $10,000 a year to Native Americans attending Bacone beginning in the fall of 2014.

“At a recent executive committee meeting, our board members approved a new scholarship which underscores Bacone’s commitment to our mission of providing higher education for Native Americans,” said Frank Willis, president of Bacone College. “We have enrollment goals that we plan on meeting, and this new scholarship should allow us to exceed those goals by as many as 100 native students.”

The Alexander Posey Scholarship, named in honor of the renowned Creek scholar, Alexander Posey, will benefit up to 100 Native American students, with those who live in dormitories on-campus eligible for the full $10,000 scholarship. Those who live off campus will be eligible to receive $5,600.

Willis also stated that up to 50 of the Posey Scholarships are reserved for citizens of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation due to their substantial and continuing contributions to Bacone College.

The scholarships are being coordinated through Bacone College’s Center for American Indians (CAI), which provides on-campus support and community for the hundreds of Native Americans who attend Bacone.  For more information about the Posey Scholarship, apply for admission to Bacone College online at https://camsportal.bacone.edu/application/login.asp or call CAI at (918) 687-3299.  Enrollment for fall 2014 is currently underway, with classes scheduled to start August 20.

Bacone College was originally established in 1880 with a mission to educate Native American leaders in Indian Territory. Bacone College, a private, four-year institution affiliated with the American Baptist Churches, now offers 29 degrees, including nursing, medical imaging, business administration, accounting, education, Christian ministry, criminal justice and American Indian Studies among others.
