WAYLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) – Michigan's newest American Indian casino is hitting the jackpot – if traffic is any measure.
There's so much interest in the Gun Lake Casino that U.S. 131 exits closest to the gambling were closed Feb. 11, the first full day of operations.
The exits were closed to prevent traffic from backing up on 131. The casino is 20 miles south of Grand Rapids.
The parking lot, with more than 2,500 spaces, was full by Feb. 11 morning. Assistant general manager David Frankhouser says decisions about whether to allow more people in are being made on an hourly basis.
The casino opened Feb. 10 night. It is owned by the Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi Indians.
