Barona Resort selects local company for locally grown produce

Local San Diego Company to Bring Organic, Farm-Fresh Vegetables and Berries to Barona Resort & Casino While Saving the Environment and Providing Local Jobs


(SAN DIEGO, CA) October 6, 2010 -- Home Town Farms, a local company introducing commercial vertical organic urban farming to San Diego, has received a letter of intent from Barona Resort & Casino to supply them with locally grown produce.

Barona is interested in buying the freshest, most nutrient-rich, locally grown organic produce.  The award-winning casino resort has been recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council, San Diego Earthworks and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, among others, for its work on greening the organization.  Home Town Farms will add another component to those programs by providing the most environmentally friendly, locally grown organic vine ripened vegetables and berries at the volume, quality and pricing needed by large organizations.

Home Town Farms combines proven growing technologies in such a way that they drastically reduce the amount of water, fuel, fertilizer, packaging and land that traditional farms use to grow the same amount of food. The growing system saves on average 85% of the water, 80% of the fertilizer and only uses 1/6th the land compared with traditional farming and because the produce will be consumed close to where it is grown, it will reduces fuel consumption and carbon output by about 90%.



Home Town Farms is working to eliminate the cost of transporting produce hundreds if not thousands of miles by establishing commercial vertical organic urban farms in densely populated areas of the city with direct to consumer sales on location where the food is grown. The produce will be available for retail purchase, in addition to wholesale sales to local markets, restaurants, schools, hospitals and grocery stores.
